Education is the cornerstone of our society, yet the centralized control by the U.S. Department of Education has often strayed from the principles of freedom, local control, and the unique needs of individual states and families.
The Homeschool Freedom Coalition is advocating for a return to state sovereignty in education, particularly emphasizing the importance of homeschooling freedoms. Here, we outline the reasons for our stance and invite you to join us in this critical mission.

We invite all supporters of educational freedom to sign our petition, share this message, and engage with your local representatives to push for these changes.
Together, we can advocate for an educational system that respects parental rights, acknowledges the failures of our Prussian-style education system, and actually serves the needs of all students across America.

Why Dissolve the Department of Education?
- Local Control: Education policy should be tailored to meet the specific needs of communities, not dictated by a one-size-fits-all federal approach. States and local school districts are better equipped to understand and address the educational, cultural, and economic needs of their students. To that end, the bloated size of our education budget nationally might be drastically reduced as parents learn to see homeschooling as the right fit for their family — no tax dollars required!
- Innovation Stifled: The federal bureaucracy often slows down educational innovation. By removing this layer, states can experiment with new educational methods, curricula, and technologies without federal oversight, potentially leading to better educational outcomes.
- Bureaucratic Overreach: The Department of Education has been known to impose regulations that can be burdensome, especially for homeschoolers. Regulations that come along with vouchers or state overreach on homeschoolers – like mandatory testing, attendance requirements, or arbitrary curriculum standards -can undermine the flexibility and autonomy that are hallmarks of homeschool education.
- Cost Efficiency: Eliminating the Department would reduce federal spending, allowing states to allocate these resources where they believe they are most needed, whether in direct educational funding, infrastructure, or teacher salaries. States would automatically monitor and allot spending more efficiently, as the boots on the ground in their areas.

Homeschooling Freedom Concerns:
- Regulatory Burden: Homeschool families have historically faced ridiculously misplaced regulatory scrutiny. They were often told by a totally failed system that they must be overseen by that same dumpster-fire of a system! This scrutiny in the past intimidated families away from homeschooling. A decentralized system would likely reduce the failed system’s ability to try to regulate and oversee homeschooling.
- Parental Rights: Homeschooling is fundamentally about parental rights to choose the best educational path for their children. Federal can often infringe on these rights, creating a need for state-specific laws that are more responsive to local values and needs. What parents are willing to have their kids taught in the Los Angeles public school system is widely different from what parents in rural Indiana want their kids to learn.
- Diversity in Education: Homeschooling thrives on diversity in teaching methods and philosophies. A federal approach can homogenize education, reducing the rich tapestry of learning styles that homeschooling brings. Our kids are not widgets or worker bees. They aren’t being raised to be lever-pullers for the global business class. They are unique reflections of our individual families, and deserve a chance to be educated to walk as free men and women!
